OXFAM Case Study

Oxfam are one of the UK’s foremost humanitarian and charitable organisations –

In order to sustain their growth within their store’s and recycling of donated clothing and books Stockrail were asked to assist in the design of a new Southern Distribution Centre. After viewing several properties around Milton Keynes a new 40,000 square foot facility was chosen.

From day one Oxfam’s project team and Stockrail worked closely in designing a material flow through the new DC starting with bulk storage items through to the recycling areas. From the plans drawn up a high bay lighting / heating systems were installed the from visits to their existing site in Bicester a wide aisle Pallet Rack system was supplied creating storage for 1,500 pallets.

For the recycling of garments and books it was agreed that a new 10,000 square foot mezzanine floor would be supplied with books recycled below and garments on the floor. The floor has been designed to take a second floor at a later date with full fire protection, lighting and heating systems commissioned.

The existing powered belt conveyor system at Bicester was reconfigured with new belt conveyors supplied to create a conveyor system transferring loose garments onto the mezzanine, books on the ground floor to be sorted prior to being stored.

A two-tier Diamond Rack storage system was supplied with open steel deck walkways with shelving supplied to store books, light items on the ground floor and garments above that can be resold through the stores or via the internet. Energy efficient lighting with PIR detectors and fire detection systems were installed to both levels.

The system consisted of 210 bays of racking with over 1,200 shelf locations supplied on the ground floor and 2,000 linear metres of hanging space on the first floor fully serviced with our HangerGlide rail system.

Stockrail also incorporated within the design new meeting rooms and main office areas including air conditioning systems, decorating and flooring, a canteen facility with cupboards, sink units, and new photo booths so garments can be photographed prior to being put on the internet for sale.
